Worship in Giving
2 Cor 8.1-5, 8-9:
We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us.
I say this not as a command, but to prove by the earnestness of others that your love also is genuine. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
We give to what we love and value. Giving to God in the Bible is always connected to our worshiping Him but it is also an expression of His grace at work in us. Above, Paul highlights that giving is an act of grace that occurs even in unlikely situations. The Macedonian Christians were in a tough time of testing and they lacked financial resources, yet they sought the opportunity to give to God's work and God's people, doing so with generosity, sacrifice, joy and worship. They gave willingly, lead by the reality of their faith. God was truly at work in them!
When Paul puts the great exchange of Jesus’ rightness for our sin in financial terms ("that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich"), he shows us that Jesus' grace and truth is not just confined to religious or spiritual spheres but touches and transforms all of our life, even our finances. He is also up front that giving comes not out of command but by hearts and minds changed by the reality of Jesus, and that is a big part of what the Christian life is all about: Jesus changing us to be like Him.
