God shows the nature of his relational grace by speaking exceedingly gracious favor to Jacob, who is an exceedingly unworthy person. In those blessings, God meets Jacob’s deepest needs: God’s presence for Jacob’s loneliness, protection for his vulnerability, a plan for the wandering exile from his family. But this work of Christ’s personal grace (John 1.51, Christ is the true ladder or staircase) is the start of God’s work in Jacob’s life, for though he see aspects of God’s majesty, Jacob still responds to God with his own bargaining self-interest. The revelation of God to Jacob has occurred and it is just the beginning of God shaping and transforming him by his grace.
